Abaji is one of the six local government area councils in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
Situated farther from the capital city centre, Abaji Area Council was created in 1986 and lay on about 1,100 square kilometres.
Formerly, the land was under the old Koton Karfe kingdom but was merged into the Federal Capital Territory for developmental purposes. Abaji Council shares common boundaries with the Toto local government area in Kogi state and the Lapai local government area in Niger state.

The current Executive Chairman of the Abaji Area Council is Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi.
He emerged victorious in the 2022 FCT area council chairmanship elections after contesting as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party and was sworn in as the chairman of the Abaji Area Council on February 12, 2022.

The Ona is a first-class traditional ruler and also the chairman of the FCT Council of Rulers. In 2022, he celebrated 25 years of his ascension to the throne.
